Carbon potential: what are you actually controlling?

A practical introduction to the variables behind a controlled carburizing atmosphere.

Editorial draft · 14 September 2026 · Technical review pending
The short answerCarbon potential is an atmosphere-control variable. It is useful for managing carburizing conditions, but it is not a direct reading of the carbon profile or case depth in a component.

Start with the atmosphere

A carburizing atmosphere is part of a larger system that includes the material, furnace and thermal cycle. Changing an atmosphere setpoint does not by itself describe what has happened inside the steel.

Make the measurement method explicit

The CARBMATE-18 product description lists carbon-potential calculations using CO with O₂ or CO with CO₂. The choice of calculation and measurement arrangement belongs in the application review.

Connect control to verification

Specify what is being controlled and separately define how the part will be accepted. Document the material, cycle, measured conditions and required verification. This makes technical discussions clearer and avoids treating a controller value as a finished-part certificate.

Questions to bring to your supplier

  • Which process variables does the proposed configuration measure and control?
  • What technical limitations and installation requirements apply?
  • How will the installation and reporting workflow be verified?
