Carburizing

Build a hard surface. Preserve a tough core.

What is carburizing?Carburizing introduces carbon into the surface of suitable steel. The treatment is selected to develop a wear-resistant case while retaining a tougher core after the appropriate hardening cycle.

The variables behind the result

Carbon potential describes the carbon-transfer tendency of the atmosphere under defined conditions. It must be considered alongside temperature, time and the material, rather than treated as a direct measurement of finished case depth.

Start with these requirements

  • Material grade and target case requirements
  • Atmosphere composition and carbon-potential calculation
  • Temperature and duration of the cycle
  • Verification of the resulting material properties

Build the equipment conversation

Start with the material and required outcome, then identify the atmosphere, measurement and control functions needed. Review candidate products with Gauss before selecting a configuration.

How do I choose the right control equipment?

Document the recipe, measurement points, existing furnace interfaces and records you need. Use these to review the product capabilities with an application engineer.

Does a controller guarantee the final material result?

No. Results also depend on the alloy, load, furnace condition, process route and verification method. A validated recipe and appropriate testing are needed.
