Nitrocarburizing

Understand the process conditions behind surface performance.

What is nitrocarburizing?Nitrocarburizing introduces nitrogen and carbon into the surface of suitable ferrous materials. The process is used to tailor surface performance; the material, treatment route and acceptance criteria determine the appropriate cycle.

The variables behind the result

Distinguish nitrocarburizing from carbonitriding when specifying a process. Gas chemistry and thermal conditions must be matched to the intended surface structure. This guide does not claim that a standard Gauss configuration covers every nitrocarburizing route.

Start with these requirements

  • Material and target surface properties
  • Process route and atmosphere requirements
  • Layer requirements and verification method
  • Controller and sensor compatibility review

Build the equipment conversation

Start with the material and required outcome, then identify the atmosphere, measurement and control functions needed. Review candidate products with Gauss before selecting a configuration.

How do I choose the right control equipment?

Document the recipe, measurement points, existing furnace interfaces and records you need. Use these to review the product capabilities with an application engineer.

Does a controller guarantee the final material result?

No. Results also depend on the alloy, load, furnace condition, process route and verification method. A validated recipe and appropriate testing are needed.
