Choosing a heat treatment control system

A structured conversation about your furnace, process, measurements and records.

Editorial draft · 14 September 2026 · Technical review pending
The short answerSelect a heat treatment control system by matching four things: the process, the measurements, the furnace interfaces and the records needed to verify execution.

1. Define the process

Identify the treatment route, material and required result. Separate the metallurgical requirement from the instrumentation requirement so that each has a clear owner.

2. Map the measurements

List the variables to measure, the sensor types already installed and the conditions at each measurement point. Ask for supported measurement methods and calibration requirements.

3. Review the interfaces

Record the furnace model, existing automation and desired software integration. Confirm compatibility and commissioning scope with the supplier before committing to a configuration.

4. Specify the records

Decide which cycle data, recipe information and operator actions need to be retained. Ask the supplier to demonstrate the required reporting workflow with your use case.

Questions to bring to your supplier

  • Which process variables does the proposed configuration measure and control?
  • What technical limitations and installation requirements apply?
  • How will the installation and reporting workflow be verified?
